Edinburgh Christmas markets: a coastal winter break

Wrap up for a festive city day, then return to a quieter base. Christmas markets work well as part of a short break when you leave time for travel, warming up indoors and the different interests of your group.

The 2026–27 festive season

Edinburgh’s Christmas is advertised from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The city tourism site identifies East Princes Street Gardens, West Princes Street Gardens and George Street as the main areas. Check the official programme for individual market and attraction opening times, admission arrangements and accessible visits. Official Edinburgh Christmas information ↗.

Build a comfortable day out

Choose one or two priorities: browsing stalls, seeing the lights or booking an attraction. Keep time for a meal and shelter from winter weather. Families may find an earlier visit easier to combine with a straightforward journey home. Book any timed activity through the organiser and keep the confirmation handy.

Getting there from Seton Sands

Compare the 26 bus with a transfer to Longniddry or Prestonpans station. A train journey and a bus journey have different starting points, so compare the full trip from your accommodation. For transport options, station links and advice on planning your return journey, see our getting around guide ↗.

Check the season before booking

Holiday parks and individual properties can have seasonal restrictions. Check the dates offered on our booking site and confirm availability rather than assuming accommodation is open throughout the full Christmas event. Christmas Day and New Year transport arrangements also need a separate check.

Make space for a coastal day

If you have a longer break, balance the city with time in Port Seton, Cockenzie or another East Lothian town. Winter daylight is short: keep outdoor plans flexible and save an indoor option for poor weather. Explore East Lothian towns and villages ↗.
