Edinburgh festivals & events: plan your stay
Choose the energy of Edinburgh for the day and the pace of the coast afterwards. A successful festival break starts with your must-see event, a suitable place to stay and a realistic route between the two.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Comedy, theatre, music and more make the Fringe a reason to build a whole trip around Edinburgh. The organiser lists the 2027 festival for 6–30 August. Start with a few must-see shows and leave gaps for exploring rather than filling every hour. Read our Fringe stay planning guide ↗.
Christmas markets and winter city days
A winter visit can combine the Christmas market with shopping, a meal and an evening performance. Edinburgh’s Christmas lists its 2026–27 season from 14 November to 3 January; individual attractions may have different hours. Plan a Christmas market break ↗.
Hogmanay and the turn of the year
If a New Year visit is on your list, check the official programme and ticket conditions before deciding where to stay. Public transport can follow special schedules, and a late celebration needs a planned journey back. Official Edinburgh festival information ↗.
The Tattoo and other summer festivals
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Edinburgh International Festival offer different reasons for a summer city visit. Check the relevant organiser for that year’s dates, venue, access information and ticket availability. Choose your accommodation dates around confirmed plans rather than assuming every event runs for the same period.
City stay or coastal base?
A city property may suit a schedule full of late shows. A coastal base may suit a mixed break with beach days and selected visits to Edinburgh. Check the individual property location and season before booking. For transport options, station links and advice on planning your return journey, see our getting around guide ↗.
Fringe by the Sea, North Berwick
Bring music, comedy and family events into your coastal break. Fringe by the Sea is an independent multi-arts festival in North Berwick, with its 2027 dates announced as 30 July–8 August 2027. Choose events to suit your group and leave time to explore the town around them.
Check the official Fringe by the Sea website ↗ for the programme, ticket availability, venues and access information. Festival tickets are separate from your accommodation booking.
Staying elsewhere in East Lothian? Plan the full journey to North Berwick and your return after the final event. The 26 bus does not provide a direct service to North Berwick; check onward connections or compare rail and taxi options for your particular property. See our transport guide ↗ and check current services before travelling.
